After an injury or surgery, your body initiates a localized, physiological response commonly known as inflammation. This response gives our bodies the ability to heal damaged cells and remove hazardous waste. Examples of inflammation include pain, redness, swelling, and loss of function. Although these indications allow us to recognize recovery has started, inflammation can become chronic and detrimental to the body if therapeutic care is not initiated right away. The recovery process after an injury or surgery is crucial for long term mobility and prevention of chronic inflammation and chronic pain.
A combination of cold therapy and compression can reduce inflammation, pain, stiffness, swelling, and improve range of motion, allowing for a more efficient recovery. It is important to note that improved pain control produces a greater likelihood of independence from narcotic (opioid) use.
Insurance
-
The Therm-X is covered by insurance under the following circumstances:
If you have an open workers compensation insurance claim
If you have active TRICARE benefits
If you have active VA benefits
If you have an open personal injury or motor vehicle accident claim
The Therm-X is unfortunately not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurances.
-
If you do not have any of the previously stated coverages, you can either purchase a Therm-X AT or rent a Therm-X HOME for the duration that you choose. The Therm-X and its associated products are HSA & FSA approved. A combination of cold therapy and compression can reduce inflammation, pain, stiffness, swelling, and improve range of motion, allowing for a more efficient recovery. It is important to note that improved pain control produces a greater likelihood of independence from narcotic (opioid) use.
-
If you have any of the previously stated coverages, The Therm-X is authorized in increments of 30 days. Ultimately, the Therm-X is available for you to use until you are fully recovered and can return to your normal, daily activities. New England Medical Solutions will follow up with you before the end of each authorized rental period to monitor if you require additional authorized rental periods.
There are some situations where the Therm-X has become an integral component of the patient’s treatment plan, where they know they are going to have recurring symptoms, and keeping the Therm-X indefinitely would drastically improve their daily life. In these situations, ask your New England Medical Solutions representative if it is possible for insurance to purchase a Therm-X for you.
What’s Next?
-
A New England Medical Solutions Care Specialist will reach out to you 1-2 weeks before your surgery date to schedule delivery of the Therm-X and answer any FAQs you may have. You can expect the delivery to take place 1-2 days before the surgery. Depending on your procedure, it may be best to schedule the delivery the day after surgery. This is to ensure the proper use of the Therm-X garment in conjunction with any post-operative bracing, slings, or specific circumstances regarding your procedure. The appointment can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes.
Although it is not necessary for the New England Medical Solutions Care Specialist to come into your home for an in-person delivery, it is highly recommended that your care specialist configures the Therm-X at the place of your recovery. This will ensure proper setup and will leave you completely confident.
-
The Therm-X should be set up in the area that the patient will be spending most of their time recovering. It is highly recommended the machine is raised off the ground. Based on this recommendation, the living room tends to be a frequently utilized site.
-
A New England Medical Solutions Care Specialist will contact you prior to your procedure and schedule a virtual tutorial for setting up the Therm-X and answering any FAQs you may have. Our care team will coordinate the shipment of the Therm-X to your home via your preference between UPS or FedEx. A tracking number will be provided, and your care specialist will keep you updated throughout the entire process.
-
Your New England Medical Solutions Care Specialist will reach out to you as the end of your rental period approaches, and you no longer require additional authorized rental periods. Once the Therm-X is ready to be picked up, a return appointment will be scheduled.
-
Please keep all packaging together when you receive the machine. Our care team will coordinate and initiate the return process by providing you with a shipping label via e-mail for your preferred carrier. Simply bring the packaged device and the label to the respective shipping center, and your job is done.
How do I use the Therm-X & what do I do if I need help?
-
As often as you can! It is recommended to be used as often as possible.
-
Yes! The machine cycles on and off until you discontinue the treatment cycle. If comfortable, please feel free to leave it on while you sleep!
-
Although the Therm-X will not cause frost bite, it is highly recommended that there is a layer of cloth, surgical dressing, or clothing between the garment and your skin.
-
Think of the programmed settings on the machine as your prescription. The settings that are pre-set have been intensively researched and studied. It has been concluded that these are the optimal parameters for cold therapy for you to use. If you are uncomfortable with what has been pre-set, please reach out to your care specialist for more information and/or guidance.

After surgery, patients may experience a nerve block lasting 12 to 48 hours, causing temporary loss of feeling. To ensure the Therm-X is functioning properly, touch the back of your hand to the garment’s interior. If the garment still doesn’t feel cold, check to ensure that the umbilical hose connecting the garment to the machine is not compromised, and there are no kinks. Also, make sure the machine is full by unscrewing the reservoir cap in the back of the machine whilst the treatment is running. If the machine still does not feel cold, please reach out to your care specialist immediately.
-
The Therm-X is designed to only add coolant once. Your care specialist will fill the machine at the time of delivery, which also acts as a demonstration on how to do so. A patient will only have to fill the machine once, if at all, during the time they have the Therm-X.
If you receive a “Low Coolant” error message, select the check mark in the bottom right of the screen to acknowledge the message. Unscrew the reservoir cap on the back of the Therm-X, fill the Therm-X with the solution provided to the red fill line on the white sticker on the inside of the opening, then select “Start Treatment” on the screen. Let the machine run for a few moments to ensure it is full, then screw the cap back on.
