Therm-X Assembly Guide

A complete tutorial on unboxing, assembling, using, and returning your Therm-X iceless cryotherapy system.

i.

About the Therm-X

After an injury or surgery, your body initiates a biological response to remove or heal damaged cells. This response is called inflammation — a defense mechanism that produces pain and swelling as it works. Although inflammation signals the start of healing, it can persist longer than needed and cause more harm than good.

A combination of cryotherapy and compression can reduce inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling, and improve range of motion — allowing for a more efficient recovery. Improved pain control also produces a greater likelihood of independence from narcotic (opioid) use.

The Therm-X is an iceless cryotherapy system that helps you recover after surgery. It plugs into a standard wall outlet and circulates 40-degree water to a thermal garment worn over your surgical site, effectively "icing" that site without the mess of bagged ice.

Overview

1

Assemble Before Surgery

Completely assemble and test-drive the Therm-X before your procedure.

Set it up in the room where you'll spend most of your recovery time.

2

Use Following Surgery

Apply as frequently as needed — the unit self-regulates on a 30-on / 30-off cycle.

Many patients use it most of the day and sleep with it at night through physical therapy.

3

Return When Complete

Once treatment is finished, follow the packing and shipping instructions to return the unit.

01.

Unbox Your Therm-X

Important

Keep the box and all packing supplies — including the pink Styrofoam packaging — to ship the unit back to New England Medical Solutions when treatment is complete.

Remove all contents from the box and confirm everything on your delivery list is present:

  • Main Unit
  • Power Supply
  • Power Cord
  • Umbilical Hose
  • Coolant (×2)
  • Instruction Manual
  • Extremity-Specific Thermal Garment
  • DVT Sleeves (if prescribed)
i

You'll receive only one extremity-specific thermal garment (shoulder, back, hip, knee, elbow, or ankle). DVT sleeves are only included if DVT prophylaxis was prescribed — check your delivery list to confirm.

02.

Assembly

Follow these steps in order. Each connection should make an audible click — that's how you know it's secure.

  1. Remove cap and add coolant to the red line, then replace the cap.

Do not overfill — the red line is the maximum.

  2. Attach the power cord from the power supply to the back of the main unit until you hear a "click."

  3. Attach the fittings from the umbilical hose to the front of the main unit until you hear a "click."

  4. If using DVT, fully insert the open end of the tubing into the DVT connector on the front of the main unit.

  5. If using DVT, securely attach the DVT garment(s) to the calf.

  6. Secure the thermal garment to the body.

Reference your extremity-specific thermal garment guide.

  7. Attach the 3 fittings from the hose to the thermal garment until you hear a "click."

    Assembly is complete.

Device Alerts

If your Therm-X displays an alert, find it below for the cause and recommended action. Tap any alert to expand.

! Coolant level is too low
What it means: The Therm-X senses that fluid level in the device is low. What to do: Refill the device's tank with the Therm-X coolant.
! Water pressure is higher than expected
What it means: The pressure level in the device is high. What to do: Ensure the umbilical hose is firmly connected on both the garment and device end. Detach and reattach the garment to the user.
! Room temperature is out of bounds
What it means: The Therm-X is being used in a room outside the required temperature range. What to do: Use the device in a 60°–80°F room with humidity below 60%.
! Exceeded maximum number of password attempts
What it means: Too many attempts were taken to surpass the password screen. What to do: Power down the device and restart it to unlock. Do not attempt to access the password loop if you are not a certified user.
! Garment water pressure sensor out of range
What it means: The garment water pressure sensor is detecting unexpected pressure. What to do: Ensure the umbilical hose is firmly connected on both the garment and device end. Detach and reattach the garment, then turn the device off and back on. Contact distributor if it persists.
! Air pressure is higher than expected
What it means: The air pressure is higher than expected. What to do: Ensure the umbilical hose or DVT hoses are unkinked. Detach and reattach the garment to the user.
! Air temperature in device is higher than expected
What it means: The air temperature inside the device is too high — usually because the side vents are blocked. What to do: Ensure airflow through the sides of the device is unobstructed. Fill the tank completely to the line and check for blocked airflow.
! Radiator coolant pump not functioning
What it means: The radiator coolant pump is not functioning correctly. What to do: Try restarting the device. If the alert persists, contact the distributor.
! Garment coolant pump not functioning
What it means: The garment coolant pump is not functioning correctly. What to do: Try restarting the device. If the alert persists, contact the distributor.
! Power supply voltage out of range
What it means: The power supply is out of the expected range. What to do: Try restarting the device. If the alert persists, contact the distributor.
! Temperature sensor out of bounds
What it means: The temperature sensor is reading an unexpected temperature. What to do: Try restarting the device. If the alert persists, contact the distributor.
! Cooling or heating not activating as expected
What it means: The device is not cooling or heating as expected. What to do: Try restarting the device. If the alert persists, contact the distributor.
! Air pressure not releasing as expected
What it means: The device is unexpectedly retaining air pressure. What to do: Immediately remove all garments. Try restarting the device and reattaching the garments. Contact the distributor if it persists.
! Garment loose or air pump not functioning
What it means: Either the garment is wrapped too loosely to apply pressure, or the air pump is not functioning correctly. What to do: Detach and reattach the garment firmly to the user. Try restarting the device. Contact distributor if problems persist.
! Garment air pressure sensor out of range
What it means: The air pressure sensor is detecting unexpected pressure. What to do: Try restarting the device. If the alert persists, contact the distributor.

Read all precautions before operating the Therm-X. These reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.

General Precautions

  • Never push objects of any kind into the Therm-X through the exterior case.
  • Never spill liquid on the Therm-X. If a spill occurs, clean immediately.
  • Do not overfill the reservoir — fill only to the red line inside the filler neck.
  • If the Therm-X gets wet, unplug it, wipe with a dry cloth, and allow it to dry before use.
  • Only operate with the supplied power cord and power supply.
  • Unplug the Therm-X when not in use.
  • Do not operate if the unit is damaged or leaking fluid.

  • Do not attempt to sterilize the Therm-X or therapy garments.
  • Apply dressings under the therapy garment lightly.
  • Do not allow the garment or hose to contact sharp objects.
  • Apply the wrap correctly before initiating therapy — incorrect application may cause it to "balloon" and damage the wrap.
  • Immediately stop compression therapy if you experience discomfort, numbness, or tingling.
  • Use only the approved Therm-X coolant.
  • All compression therapies must be turned OFF when the wrap is removed.
  • Do not use the calf DVT therapy with the foot DVT garment — this is not an effective or approved treatment.
